MINING IN NEVADA
The gold resource of Nevada currently exceeds 100 million ounces, producing some 12 million ounces annually - the second largest gold mining area in the world after South Africa. Most mines today utilize open-pit mining methods to extract the gold bearing ore from the ground, extracting the gold by cyanide-leach methods. The gold is generally very fine-grained, invisible to the naked eye - thus the term "no see'em" gold. This quaint terminology has now been largely replaced by the more geoscientific title "epithermal sediment-hosted gold deposits.

With the price of gold currently breaking new ground in the excess of $860 per ounce, a new vitalized mining boom is being experienced in Nevada. Large tracts of ground are being claimed in all areas of Nevada. Drill rigs, geologists, and assay laboratories are overbooked, having workloads never before experienced. The established mines, such as the Goldstrike and the Pipeline/Cortez mines are enjoying huge profits.

Not only are the precious metal mines doing well, the established copper districts at Ely and Yerington are very active. Quadra Mining Ltd. has recently revitalized the Robinson Mine at Ely and Quaterra Resources Inc. is re-examining the entire Yerington copper district, hoping to place the old mine back into production. Molybdenum is another key resource of Nevada, with large deposits being developed at Eureka, Battle Mountain and Tonopah.

Throughout the years, John and Jeannette have continued to prospect, stake mining claims and collect rock and soil samples together. The morning hours are spent prospecting and exploring for promising mineral occurrences. By mid afternoon, when it becomes too hot to climb hills, they would venture to favourite locations searching for Mustangs. These days are gratifying and exciting, a partnership of interests that became a cherished and rewarding experience.
